We are currently seeking to hire individuals to assist with health underwriting.
Job Description
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Health Underwriter will perform standard financial risk analysis using skills and techniques in conformance with established underwriting policies, procedures and methodologies. Using health status and/or claims information, the incumbent assesses morbidity risk within client company guidelines to assure equitable treatment of our client companies and their applicants for insurance and producers in order to meet revenue and profitability goals.
- Determine whether to accept, modify or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazards, and other information pertinent to the decision.
- Follow specific underwriting guidelines and procedures for client companies.
- Maintain time-service, quality and production goals for assigned work.
- Develop a proposal that adequately meets the needs of the target customers while adequately protecting the company's assets.
- Appropriate use of the underwriting tools and company record keeping is essential.
- Develop an appropriate proposal in terms of price, coverage, terms and conditions which details the risk fully.
- Manages desk responsibilities, including meeting quoting deadlines, conducting roundtables, obtaining appropriate sign offs for authority, getting underwriting notes completed fully and timely, etc.
- Understands the coverage afforded by the forms and can explain the exposure to loss assumed and restricted by the insuring agreements, exclusions and conditions of coverage.
- Develop and build relationships with producers consistent with the quality of the risk and companies' strategy.
- Organize and prioritize risks and effectively communicates information needs with the emphasis on building relationship by setting reasonable expectations and obtaining information essential to the evaluation of the risks.
- Participates in other duties or special projects as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- 5 or more years related work experience
Additional Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance or Mathematics, preferred
- Industry designations / studies preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word and Excel
- Good computer knowledge and skills regarding software and VPN
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Good negotiation skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of underwriting philosophy and risk pool management.
